Stratton and I went to 1 Fresh for lunch today. It is the best place to go to plot the benevolent takeover of the free musical world. (the sweet and spicey sauce is the best, btw) So who won? Fay? or Maida Vale? Not sure. Rain came, but our sharp suits and stylish shoes stayed relatively mud-free. Not so sure about the mix. We christened the Beta Bar v2.0, and made the way straight in the wilderness for the Lee Boys, who played funky jams way into the night. We ushered in the light, hopefully a little. Stay tuned. “3SW” is coming. Though it lingers, wait for it! “If you hit a wrong note, then make it right by what you play afterwards.” – Joe Pass In the studio tonight to revisit some sounds on the new track, Three Small Words. It’s come to be quite a game of… well we’re not sure really. Cat and Mouse? No, more like Jack-in-the Box. Putting along through the song you find yourself searching for the BIG surprise that’s gonna set it up on its feet, but it doesn’t jump out at you like that scary clown. It’s more subtle than that. Our good friend and cohort, Zach Cramer calls it “musical reduction”. Makes sense too. Guys who normally play hard and with picks find themselves lightly finger-picking. But, don’t let that fool you. This is still Rock-N-Roll. Once upon a time, dinosaurs roamed the earth. During this time, envelopes were pushed, creativity flowed, and sounds that had never been heard before poured out of speakers around the world. And singles were released. In this time before the “long-player” (LP) or CD, the three-minute “song” – a gem, a release, a celebration of spirit ruled the airwaves, and the public waited to inhale these small doses of transcendence while the best musicians in the world buckled down for the next song. The Beatles, The Stones, Hendrix. The singles existed before the “record.” In that spirit (without putting ourselves in that company), Maida Vale went into the studio on Aug 2 to begin work on a single, “Three Small Words”, that will be released in the next few weeks. Is there a new CD coming? Eventually, but in the meantime, we thought we’d release the creativity as it flows, rather than save it all up. Stay tuned. |
