HOME Music Shows Store Blog

Status this week… Maida Vale is switching gears. For about 1 year now, we’ve been writing at more or less breakneck pace. Given that we all have full-time jobs and families (some of us), getting a band from zero songs to almost two hours of music has been really difficult and challenging. The Beta Bar show, however, showed us that we’ve crossed a finish line of sorts; we can play a full night somewhere, without even touching our entire catalogue (inexplicably, “Westway” was left out of the set). So now we’re wondering about what’s next, where we should turn. We’re planning on going back into the studio in a few months, and without showing our cards too much, we’re beginning to contemplate what creative direction the record will take. Not only that, but what will the process look like? We are slowing down, allowing things to develop more organically. Ironically, it’s leading to more ideas than I think we’d been prepared for. We’re jamming a lot, twisting old songs around, turning them upside down and inside out and seeing what’s been lurking inside there, like when you find an old dollar inside last year’s winter coat (that you’re selling off). We’re upping the vibe. Stepping on the phaser pedal. Hitting the cracked cymbal. Out.

For anyone planning to come to the Beta Bar tonight, the headlining band for tonight has canceled, but MAIDA VALE IS STILL PLAYING. We will probably go on closer to 10 and play a longer set. The cost at the door will be lower now too. Hope to see you there.

Frames.
Rectangular optometries,
Souls beholden to the momentary
Lightening flash of a camera.

Eyes open
With capture hopes,
Eternally frozen ambition
And dreams’ desires
That meet Melville’s future

Frames.
Preserving the eternal youth,
Mothers, wives
With white all ‘round—
But reality burns much more

Brightly

And withering.

Shuffling feet in wornout shoes
40 Years of the killing blues
Bitter herbs and sacred songs
Blow the night away

Dusty ridge of heaven’s gate
Miles away from the river graves
Promise land where the honey flows
But I will never see

Oh Jordan, Jordan Jordan I can’t cross over
Oh Jordan, Jordan, Jordan Let me come inside!

Why oh why you wanna treat me this way
Brought me so far and laid me to waste
Did I pay the price for sad mistake
You’re such a jealous man
I’m standing here under the yellow sun
While you take my brothers and sisters home
And I lay down to feel the earth Swallow up my bones

Oh Jordan, Jordan Jordan I can’t cross over
Oh Jordan, Jordan, Jordan Let me come inside!

Either way I’m coming home
